What is informed consent?
Before you undergo an operation for a surgical disease, your doctor will be asked to explain things that you need to know about the procedure. This is giving informed consent. It gives the patient some insights on what to expect in an operation.
This may appear as a formality to most of us, but in reality, this process should be taken seriously. Before an operation, frank and clear discussion should be done with you and your surgeon. There are a few things that you need to consider when undergoing an operation. These things are:
1. What are the indications that led your doctor to opinion that an operation is needed ?
2. Are there any other treatment alternatives available for your condition?
3. What will be the outcome of your condition if you didn't have this operation?
4. What are the basic procedures involved in this operation?
5. What are the risks involved?
6. If ever an operation is performed, will it improve my health or quality of life?
7. How long will I stay in the hospital ?
8. How long is my recovery period ?
9. When can I resume my normal routinely activities?
10. Are there any residual effects after my operation?
Your surgeon can always volunteer as much information as he like, but remember the operation will be performed on you and that you need to know all the facts that you think is necessary before you give your consent. The doctor cannot guarantee outcomes because each operation is different and will depend on the individual response of each and every patient. Nonetheless your doctor can give you an idea of what to expect.
